If you have experienced the consequences of high blood pressure or if you have seen them in a person close to you, you know how important it is to pay attention to your blood pressure. In addition to ensuring a healthy lifestyle and diet, regular monitoring and recording of blood pressure is essential. For people at risk of high blood pressure, this usually means measuring and recording their blood pressure levels at least twice a day. To have a real chance of sustaining this discipline, this regular blood pressure check needs to be integrated into daily life and made as easy as possible. One way to do so is by using the BloodPressureCompanion.
The BloodPressureCompanion ensures that you can record a measured blood pressure value quickly and without any effort. You can, for example, get a homescreen widget to quickly enter your latest values. The widget also shows you the last measured value or, if you prefer, the average of your measurements to date. The BloodPressureCompanion also gives you the opportunity to demand detailed information based on the type of blood pressure monitor or body position being used. It remembers all of your key measurements and can present them as a variety of different statistics. It has an export feature that allows you to take the processed data to your next doctor's visit. You could also, if you chose, show the world your values or selectively share with family and friends.
High blood pressure (hypertension) is a condition where the blood pressure of the arterial vascular system is chronically elevated. According to the WHO, a systolic blood pressure of at least 140 mmHg or a diastolic blood pressure of 90 mmHg is defined as hypertension.
Causes of high blood pressure, disturbances of the endocrine system, cardiovascular system and kidney damage. The majority of cases, however, are based largely on unknown factors.
In 1999, the World Health Organization introduced the following classification of arterial hypertension:
Category | Systolic | Diastolic |
---|---|---|
Normal | < 130 | < 85 |
Prehypertension | 130-139 | 85-89 |
Stage 1 hypertension | 140-159 | 90-99 |
Stage 2 hypertension | 160-179 | 100-109 |
Hypertensive crisis | ≥ 180 | ≥ 110 |
Isolated systolic hypertension | ≥ 140 | < 90 |
More detailed information about high blood pressure can be found in the treatment guideline for arterial hypertension or in the following book:
The goal of any hypertension treatment is to reduce the risk of complications. Therefore, the aim is to normalize any blood pressure below 140/90 mmHg, below 140/ 85 mmHg in patients with diabetes mellitus II and below 125/75 in renal disorders. Treatment takes place independently of palpable discomfort because high blood pressure initially shows no symptoms.
Information about possible high blood pressure treatments can be found in the following books:
On the homescreen of the BloodPressureCompanion, its main function can be found behind one of these buttons. In addition to the Help button, further help can be accessed in:
In the BloodPressureCompanion menu, you will also find the "Import" extension. If you buy this extension, you can re-import exported readings to restore them.
To quickly enter your latest values or to quickly read your latest or average value we provide homescreen widgets. Just give them a try by adding them to your homescreen.
On devices with Android version lower than 3.0 the resolution of graphics in the exported PDF file may be low. A workaround is to use the device in landscape orientation during exporting of the PDF file.
